The guys from Coala Filmes were invited by Melissa to create this huge stop motion piece, sticking no less than 350,000 Post-It notes on their Gallery walls in São Paulo. Coala then asked me to do all the Art Direction and Animation.

It took about 5 months since the first sketches until the final cut. The walls were 8 meters tall and more than 20 meters wide, so the first thing we had to do was to figure out how to make the animation possible. I created the first 4 scenes based on previous fronts that covered the Gallery walls for the last few years. But the last scene, which closes the movie, was totally original.

I created all the layouts and animation first digitally, and then the producers at Coala would transpose it to the walls, which was not always an easy logistics. Having to adapt everything to the Post-It size and number of colors available, the Art Direction was thought as a big low resolution piece, more or less inspired by early video games graphics, specially their use of pixelated gradients.

The funniest thing was to see people interacting and leaving all kinds of messages written on the walls. By the way all Post-It notes were later recycled.

For this project, Lobo invited me to join them from the concept to the post production steps. The idea was to make sound and music visible through graphic elements, so that the animation would vibrate responding to the sound.

With that in mind I first developed the style frames below in a very untied way, and later they were merged with other proposals from the guys at Lobo, to create the final look for the film. After that I worked animating and compositing the first and last scenes.

I was invited by my friends at Giroscópio to help conceive and make the art direction of these three spots for Oi FM. The idea was to build everything on paper, and animate it in stop motion. The scripts would have to present three situations, each one ilustrating a quality of the radio station: free, plural and interactive.

It was amazing for me to be part of the whole proccess, since conceiving each script, storyboarding, cell animating, then printing, cutting, pasting, to the laborious animation itself. The result is this very dynamic, rich textured, colorful film.

Drawings done while waiting.

I was invited to work once again with director Cesar Cabral and the people from Coala Filmes, this time to do the Art Direction and Post Production Direction for their latest stop motion extravaganza: Tempestade. I was trusted to design the character and all scenarios, from the look of the sea and the clouds to the small details of the tugboat and every object onboard, that were later built by Coala aces Olyntho and Anália Tahara.

The story was inspired on Beatles´s Eleanor Rigby and the work of british painter William Turner, so the idea was to bring, through the Art Direction, the loneliness and the epic struggle against the overwhelming forces of nature that this sailor has to face in a tormented sea.

For the Art Direction I started with these general concept arts so we could get a better idea of how the film should feel like. They consist on primary guidelines regarding light, color palette and drama. Also helped us to see the relative proportion of sea, tugboat an lighthouse. Below:

The tugboat basically had to be old and dirt, with an abandoned look on the outside, but in a very schematic and optimized arrangement on the inside, reflecting the character´s routine.

Here are some steps of the sailor´s proccess. Once we agreed on which way to go, I developed some pose and expressions studies, and also the clothes, refining everything until the final look. A part of our studies was the figures of Giacometti, also some old European stop motion movies.
